Muddy Creek to Yea
Nestled in a valley where the Yea and Goulburn rivers meet, the township of Yea (pronounced 'yay') was originally called 'Muddy Creek'. In 1855 its official name was changed to honour Colonel Lacy Walter Yea, who was killed in the Crimean War.
Flora and fauna
Pack your binoculars and wander the natural bush and riverine floodplain wetlands just a short walk from the main street. Marvel at the biologically diverse aquatic and bird life and keep an eye out for a platypus as you cross the cable suspension bridge. Visit the Y Water Discovery Centre to learn more about the wetlands' flora and fauna or to book a guided tour.
Tunnels and train stations
Explore the 200-metre-long Cheviot tunnel. Constructed with handmade bricks of local clay, the tunnel was once part of the Tallarook to Mansfield rail line and now forms part of the Great Victorian Rail Trail. Take the time to stop at heritage-listed Yea Railway Station for ride back to days of yore.
